The Sun: Murdoch's next crap-rag which needs taking down!

YEAH!!! GET HIM!!!!

A few months ago, the Sun ran an article claiming the 3DS has record amounts of returns due to consumers feeling dizzy and sick. Upon contacting several UK retailers this was proven to be COMPLETE CRAP. Now since the 3DS has had a price drop they are again spreading their poison....

It’s not the first time The Sun have purposely given the 3DS negative press. Take a look at their archives and you’ll know what I mean. It’s time to let them know that this kind of reporting is not acceptable, no matter what the subject is. The reporter responsible for this latest mess is Business Editor, Steve Hawkes.

Ono hints at SF Vs. Tekken 3D!

"It’s possible. For the 3DS, I wanted to do an Arcade Edition version, but I haven’t had a chance to do that because of all the other things I’m up to. At the company, we’re debating should we go for an AE port on 3DS? Should we skip that and go straight to Street Fighter x Tekken? There are a lot of things up in the air, so I can’t say for sure what our next 3DS project will be."

UK 3DS Retailer Reactions

Finally we have some UK relatyed info concerning the price of the 3DS...

"The 3DS was expected to see the company through the [home] console transition from Wii to Wii U, but the platform has been partly let down by a lack of content. If there is no momentum in the platform, third parties are more likely to delay or even shelve game releases, which will only exacerbate the situation."

Harding-Rolls said this "decisive but uncharacteristically early move" by Nintendo was "both reactive and proactive", suggesting Nintendo was positioning itself "more strongly" ahead of "incoming competitive threats", cough the PS Vita and iPad 3.

"The last time Nintendo was prompted to cut its price quickly after launch was with the N64 in 1997."
Piers Harding-Rolls, analyst, Screen Digest

Nintendo announced the 3DS price cut this morning, which Eurogamer later found out would trim "around a third" from the UK 3DS price.

In Europe, shops set the price for Nintendo goods. In the US and Japan, Nintendo calls the shots.
Today's UK 3DS RRP stands at around £229.99. Take a third from that and you're left with £153.

Local shops haven't announced their new 3DS price points, but the twin peaks of UK high street gaming - HMV and Game - both welcome the change.

"It's a significant price drop that will give the format a much needed boost. This cut is clearly great news which we welcome and will look to pass on."Tim Ellis, head of games, HMV. "It's good timing too, especially with the holidays just under way, and the new price point will make it a much more justifiable purchase for parents, which I think is an important factor."

Game spokesperson Neil Ashurst said Nintendo's announcement was "really exciting news".
"We will announce our new Nintendo 3DS price soon," promised Ashurst in a statement offered to Eurogamer, "but we are always committed to offering the best value possible through competitive pricing, our trade in mechanic and offers on games."

Nintendo rename Super Mario and Mario Kart 3DS

Super Mario 3DS is now going by the entirely different Super Mario 3D Land. Which is horrible, the 3D should swap places with land to make Super Mario Land 3D.

Mario Kart 3DS is now called Mario Kart 7, which is silly as its the ninth Mario Kart. Lets count em...

Super Mario Kart
Mario Kart 64
Mario Kart: Super Circuit
Mario Kart: Double Dash
Mario Kart Arcade GP
Mario Kart DS
Mario Kart Arcade GP 2
Mario Kart Wii
Mario Kart 7

Ok, two of those were Arcade release but still, things like this annoy me. To avoid conflict cant they just call it something cool like Mario Kart: Power Up or even stick to Mario Kart 3D!

The end is at hand?

I remember the same thing was said when the N64 was around, and then again with the Gamecube, and again with the Wii, but below is a rather alarmist quote...

It comes down to Wii U. If it is a failure, and doesn’t sell well at all, this company could just be at the beginning of its troubles. - Asif Khan, analyst

Nintendo slashes 3DS price amid worrying financials...UPDATE

Update: Reports are coming in that the European prices for the 3DS are 169 Euros and £130-£170 for the UK. Which doesnt help too much!

Nintendo have downgraded its earning forcasts for the current half year and full year terms. Its lowered shipment forcasts for Wii and DS but kept 3DS at the same, but also increased software targets.

The 3DS itself recieves a hefty price reduction... below are the worldwide prices we know so far....

¥25,000 to ¥15,000 (Euro 224 to 134 = 90 Euro drop / £196 to £118 = £78 drop)
$249.99 to $169.99 (Euro 174 to 118 = 56 Euro drop / £152 to £104 = £48 drop)
AU$349.95 to AU$249.95 (Euro 268 to 191 = 77 Euro drop / £235 to £168 = £67 drop)

The averages work out as 74 Euro drop / £64 drop which means 147 Euro / £165

European prices are currently unknown but I've used a currency converter and put Euro and UK prices in brackets.

EA - New Wii U DEV KITS details!

Here are a few quotes from EA president Andrew Wilson....

"As every new piece of hardware and every new development library comes through we get a greater understanding of the power. With our early research we had been very happy with the output of the box and we expect that that will only go up moving forward. There are added challenges for us as developers when you think about rendering on two screens and what that might mean, but we're looking forward to that challenge.

"It's still moving, but I think we'll be able to do anything that we can do on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on the Wii U."

"[Online is] something that we're working very closely with Nintendo on, we are highlighting to them what we believe are the most important elements to that infrastructure to deliver a connected experience that we think is the future of gaming. We have a series of people who are under very strict NDAs as you can imagine, operating with [Nintendo], building that [online] system out. They have demonstrated an openness and willingness to work with us and work with developers that I think will only land us in a positive place."

"The timing of that VIP party [Wii U launch] is largely dependent on Nintendo, which we're waiting to hear like everyone. We're preparing development and we will make a judgement-call on the timing of that and how it relates to the other platforms once they have a better idea of when they're launching."

"We are in pre-production for everything on FIFA, so we have our long-lead team thinking about Kinect ... Wii U ... What FIFA looks like on PS3, PC, Xbox 360 in general. But the core team is still finaling FIFA 12. So it's very much an early pre-production ideation phase right now."

More hints at Wii U version of El Shaddai

Heres a quote from Sawaki Takeyasu from Ignition Entertainment.
  • Ignition recently claimed that El Shaddai may appear on the Wii U and Playstation Vista, whats your thoughts on both systems and are they something that appeal to developers more or less than the Xbox 360 and PS3?
Sawaki: I believe that Ignition has speculated about how they might want to bring the El Shaddai universe to these new platforms, but nothing has been announced yet. I’m curious to see what the fans in North America and Europe will want from any prospective future offshoots from the first game. Clearly, both the Wii U and PS Vita offer all sorts of exciting new control methods and connectivity options, so I feel that anything is possible with these new devices, and the El Shaddai universe is rife with a multitude of avenues that could be explored. I’m personally a big fan of the iPad, so I’m curious what might be possible with touch-panel enabled consoles.

New UK 3DS advert - Vast improvement!

I saw this on TV the other night, I must say it is much more clear this is a NEXT GENERATION DS, rather than just another DS like the original launch advertising!

Square Enix says "don't write off the the Wii U"

The following quote comes from Square Enix's worldwide technology director Julien Merceron

"I'd say, don't write off the console. For every console it's the same thing: one of the most important things is going to be the launch line-up. We see that every time there's a great title shipping on PSP, the PSP sales go up, and every time there's a great title shipping on 3DS, the 3DS sales go up. If the audience and players can see that there are products for them, there's definitely going to be wide adoption of Wii U. The things of utmost importance are going to be the pricing at launch, and the line-up. They're trying to do their own thing. Generally they don't seem to look for breadth, in terms of the things [features] they are supporting with their console. They seem to be focusing a lot, and trying to make sure the things they are focusing on are going to be at the top. I'd always be careful making judgements on their hardware. They have an approach to it that is very different from others, but they have a lot of inner control of what they are doing. And there's a lot of knowledge and skill behind it."

Japanese Developers weigh in on the Wii U

The most recent issue of Famitsu has some interviews with various Japanese devs about their thoughts on the Wii U...

Tomonobu Itagaki (Valhalla Game Studios)
Said that he has lots of ideas. Including Devil's Third and a variety of other things.

Jun Takeuchi (Capcom)
He believes that individual developers' skills will be clear by how they make use of the controller without it drawing the eyes away from the television screen. If Wii U has a conservative price, it could be a smash  hit.

Hideyuki Kobayash (Capcom)
He feels the Wii U controller is a challenge issued to developers. He is excited to see what types of games developers make.

Shuu Takumi (Capcom)
Said that coming into contact with the Wii U makes his dreams expand. One idea he has had is that the controller could be used for exploring a crime scene from a different perspective.

Kenichi Ogasawara (Tecmo Koei)
Thinks the Wii U will generate new types of games that use the system's dual screen setup. He likes the multiplayer possibilities of having one player use the controller screen while the other payers view the television screen.

Yousuke Hayashi (Tecmo Koei)
He thinks the Wii U has the ability to realize completely new game experiences.

Akihiro Suzuki (Tecmo Koei)
The E3 videos made him think that the system will deliver new, never-before-seen types of games. While he can't give any specifics about projects at present, the controller does get his juices flowing.

Toshihiro Nagoshi (Sega)
He thinks it's great that Nintendo's hardware has unified around the concept of having two screens. He's interested in seeing if the switch to HD will bring changes to the Wii market.

Shinji Mikami (Tango)
He hasnt played the Wii U yet. He's happy about the HD support.

Yoshifumi Hashimoto (Marvelous Entertainment)
The new controller looks like it will lead to new ideas. For example, in Harvest Moon when you're in your in-game room, if you turn on the television, the video from the television could be shown on the controller screen. He said that he'd personally like to try out a game that splits roles, where one player uses the controller and the second player uses the Wiimote.

Akihiro Hino (Level-5)
Because stylus-based games like Professor Layton can now be played, they can consider ports. He also thinks the system could expand the type of games that can be played in the living room, so he'd like to think about these types of game in the future as well.

Jiro Ishii (Level-5)
He was excited seeing Zelda in HD. He's excited about the changes the controller brings to board games and card games.

Modern Warfare 3 skipping DS/3DS?

Activision are apparently not making a DS or 3DS version of Modern Warfare 3...

"Unfortunately, there will be no Modern Warfare 3 DS, or more importantly, 3DS. This, despite unconfirmed reports that Electronic Arts will supposedly release a pint-sized version of Battlefield 3 on 3DS October 25".

Hopefully, this gives Battlefield 3 rumour a greater chance of being real! However this is kinda scary considering that the DS boxart usually appears with the Wii boxart.... Could Nintendo fans miss out completely?

EA excited for Wii U's possiblities

The following is an except from an interview with EA Play's VP Jeff Karp...

EA announced a huge support for Wii U at E3 thanks to its online elements. But it must also be a format that appeals to EA Play as a division?
Let’s face it, first parties have done very well on Wii, and third parties haven’t. It’s not in our sweetspot – we’ve done our best at it, but it’s difficult to develop there.
Development on the Wii U is more like what we are used to on other platforms. We will still be very selective and make sure we create the appropriate experiences for Wii U, but it is much closer aligned with HD consoles and really significantly expands our addressable market.
There are some compelling ways, be it The Sims, FIFA or other games where that second screen can help. Be that something like an inventory screen, or a different look at the game session.
I think Wii U is going to expand the opportunities for all games to be reimagined, especially the products at EA Play, and really extend our audience. And what about Vita?I think it looks like a great device, but the real challenge for all game handhelds is how they stack up against mobile and tablets. After all, how many devices do people want to carry? We are a platform agnostic business and we want them all to succeed, but it will be challenge for handhelds. Just look at how smartphones and tablets continue to grow and emerge.

DICE Executive Producer Patrick Bach has said that they have made the multiplayer maps on consoles smaller, but "it's not that we have cut them in half," but rather squeezed them "slightly to keep the action up."

Heres hoping the Wii U version is the definitive version... :)
