Nintendo Investors Briefing Summary



Here are the key points from yesterday's briefing...



- Culdcept and Calciobit are heading to 3DS in 2012
- Iwata feels responsible for 3 quarter decline
- 3DS sales still strong in US after Xmas
- this will be Nintendo's worst year financially
- believes the company can break even on 3DS hardware in FY3/13
- 200 titles coming to 3DS
- 60% of 3DS owners connected to internet
- looking to expand digital offerings
- Wii U before Christmas
- appropriate titles prepared for launch
- Wii U will have near field communication for easy settlement (may mean the Wii U controller has a touch-to-sync option for syncing to the Wii U itself)
- this will be international
- still have plans to do DLC, but they need more time to study the market
- Wii U will have individual accounts per system
- lots of internet/digital related news going forward, but not today
- digital will include user-to-user communications and sharing
- keys to profitability are improving 3DS, focusing on software and Mario titles
- if those that are Super Mario fans get tired of the content they have, Nintendo could look into digital content to drive extra sales
- digital is not the enemy of retail and will not match retail pricing
- Nintendo will be talking with partners to figure out digital approach
- Nintendo doesn't want to decline third parties that want to charge for digital content
- Nintendo has learned not to have gaps inbetween software releases, sees digital as a way to fill those periods
- Iwata views third year of 3DS as crucial to determining future hardware/software sales
- several alliances/partnerships with external parties, previously not considered, will be announced this year
- Miyamoto is once again not going into retirement but allocating time to "chatting" to the young developers
- trying to reach those that haven't done development before
- Iwata is critical of the Wired mag interview that said Miyamoto was retiring. 
- Miyamoto is says his job is to create big hits
- priority is to satisfy existing 3ds users, preparing titles that will expand user base combined with network
- Miyamoto says WiiU has to be next step, network has to have totally new concept to be different
- digital will see a dramatic improvement
- Wii U won't just be about better graphics, but graphics are indeed important, especially for games like Legend of Zelda
